Due to its close to Tokyo, Shonan is probably most crowded and popular surf area in Japan. Wave is usually smaller than Chiba throughtout the year. But when typhoons hit there, the wave gets very hollow, especially Kamakura area. Best season is August through October.
Chiba is located east of Tokyo and bordered by Ibaraki to the north. It is very popular surf area due to good access from the cities and some classic reef points can offer the best surfing in Japan. The best season is August through October when the typhoons start to march up the coast.
Izu is very popular tourist destination in central Japan. Lots of peolpe visit this area for hotspring, fishing, scuba diving and surfing. Water is cleaner and warmer than any other surf area in Kanto region. As there are not many surf spots, it gets very crowded during summer season.
Ibaraki is located in the northern part of the Kanto region. It is often rainy in spring and autumn, but in winter the dry winds keep the skies mostly fine and clear. The waves are consistent and water is clean but this area is very sensitive to wind direction.
With a long coastline and mountain ranges, Shizuoka is the perfect place to enjoy windsurfing, scuba diving, surfing and mountain sports. It is also well-known for home of Mt Fuji. Throughtout the year, You can always expect a decent wave but like Ibaraki, wind conditions greatly affect this area.
Tohoku consists of six prefectures in the north-eastern part of Honshu. The area is largely mountainous and famous for its countryside ,skiing hot springs, high quality rice and sake. From reef and beach breaks to rivermouths, it offers good quality waves for all level of surfers.
